Artist Statement
My practice is a visceral investigation into the physical fragility of the body and the inherent instability of human perception. The canvas functions as a site of physical and psychological struggle, where the primal tensions of life, memory, and mortality materialize. Through figurative expression, the work holds the image at the boundary of emergence and dissolution, resisting immediate cognitive resolution.
私の制作は、肉体の脆さと人間の知覚に内在する不安定さを生々しく探求するものです。画面は、生命、記憶、そして死をめぐる根源的な緊張関係が具現化する、身体的・心理的な闘争の場として機能します。具象的表現を通じて、作品は即時的な認知的解決を拒みながら、像を出現と溶解の境界にとどめます。
Biography
Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1973, Toshihiro Egawa began his professional career in 1999, gaining widespread international recognition for his extensive artwork within the global death metal music scene and underground graphic culture. In 2014, he expanded his practice into fine art, establishing his studio in Gifu, Japan.
Egawa’s perspective is deeply informed by personal confrontations with mortality, including surviving critical cardiac surgeries and the loss of his partner. These physical experiences and personal histories serve not as narratives to be directly illustrated, but as a fundamental orientation toward the fragility of existence.
Grounded in an autonomous studio process, his current fine art practice investigates the physical vulnerability of the body and the instability of human perception. Through a continuous process of material engagement, layering, and erasure, his figurative paintings hold the image at the boundary of emergence and dissolution, resisting immediate cognitive resolution.
1973年大阪府生まれ。江川敏弘は1999年よりプロフェッショナルとしてのキャリアを開始し、世界のデスメタル・ミュージックシーンやアンダーグラウンドのグラフィックカルチャーにおいて、多大なアートワークを提供し国際的な認知を得る。2014年よりファインアートへと活動の領域を広げ、現在は岐阜県にスタジオを構えて制作を行っている。
江川の視座は、重篤な心臓手術やパートナーの喪失といった、生死に直面した個人的な体験に強く影響を受けている。これらの身体的体験や個人史は、直接描かれるべき物語としてではなく、存在の脆さに向き合う根底的なスタンスとして機能している。
自律的なスタジオ・プロセスに根差した現在のファインアート活動において、彼は肉体の脆さと人間の知覚に内在する不安定さを探求している。マテリアルとの物理的な対話、積層、そして抹消のプロセスを通じて、彼の具象絵画は即時的な認知的解決を拒みながら、像を出現と溶解の境界にとどめている。
