Artist Statement
My practice is a visceral investigation into the physical fragility of the body and the inherent instability of human perception. The canvas functions as a site of physical and psychological struggle, where the primal tensions of life, memory, and mortality materialize. Through figurative expression, formless anxieties and affective fluctuations are embodied—presenting images that resist immediate cognitive resolution and invite the viewer into an unfiltered psychological landscape.
私の制作は、肉体の脆さと人間の知覚に内在する不安定さを生々しく探求するものです。画面は、生命や記憶、そして死をめぐる根源的な緊張関係が具現化される、身体的・心理的な闘争の場として機能します。具象的表現を通じて、形を持たない不安や情動の揺らぎが身体性を獲得し、即時的な解釈を拒む像として、鑑賞者を剥き出しの心理的空間へと誘います。
Biography
Born in Osaka in 1973, Toshihiro Egawa began his career in 1999, establishing international recognition for his extensive artwork within the death metal subculture. In 2014, he expanded his practice into the realm of contemporary fine art and is currently based in Gifu, Japan.
Egawa’s production is deeply informed by profound personal confrontations with mortality, notably surviving critical cardiac surgeries and the loss of his partner. These physical and psychological traumas serve as more than mere biographical narratives; they constitute the core of the corporeality and affective intensity within his work. By critically recontextualizing his roots in underground culture and dark aesthetics, Egawa establishes an idiosyncratic visual language that transcends conventional genre consumption.
1973年大阪生まれ。1999年よりキャリアをスタートし、デスメタル・サブカルチャーにおける幅広いアートワークで国際的な認知を確立する。2014年からは現代美術の領域へ実践を拡張し、現在は岐阜を拠点に制作を行う。
江川の制作は、幾度もの重篤な心臓手術を生き延びたこと、そしてパートナーの喪失という、死と直面する深刻な個人的体験に深く裏打ちされている。これらの身体的・心理的なトラウマは単なる経歴的な物語ではなく、彼の作品における身体性と情動的強度の核を成している。アンダーグラウンド・カルチャーとダーク・エステティクスにおける自身のルーツを批評的に再文脈化することで、江川は単なるジャンル的消費を超越した独自の視覚言語を確立している。
