Artist Statement
My practice investigates life and death, dissolution, and human existence. Through my own bodily experiences and memories, I continuously contemplate the depths of being. For me, painting is not merely self-expression, but also an act of incarnation — using black paper, watercolor pencil, and my own body to give form to an image that seems to want to exist on its own terms.
私の作品は、生と死、崩壊、そして人間存在について探求するものです。自身の身体的な体験や記憶を通じて、存在の深淵について思索を重ねています。
描く行為は単なる感情の表出ではありません。黒い紙と水彩色鉛筆という物質を介し、立ち現れようとする像の受肉を自らの身体で媒介する試みと考えています。
Biography
Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1973, and currently based in Gifu, Toshihiro Egawa began his professional career in 1999. He gained international recognition for his extensive body of artwork within the global death metal music scene and underground graphic culture. In 2014, he expanded his practice into fine art, focusing on studio-based painting.
Egawa’s perspective is deeply informed by personal confrontations with mortality, including surviving two life-threatening cardiac events, as well as the loss of his partner. These physical experiences and personal histories serve not as narratives to be directly illustrated, but as a fundamental orientation toward the finitude of existence. Utilizing a physical process with black paper and watercolor pencils, his work captures figurative images emerging from absolute darkness, persistently questioning the depths of the human condition.
1973年大阪府生まれ、岐阜県を拠点に活動。
江川敏弘は1999年よりプロフェッショナルとしての活動を開始し、世界のデスメタル・シーンやアンダーグラウンドのグラフィックカルチャーにおいて、多数のアートワークを手がけ国際的な認知を獲得した。2014年よりファインアートへと本格的に領域を広げ、スタジオワークを中心とした絵画制作を展開している。
江川の視座は、生死に関わる重篤な心臓の疾患を二度経験したことや、パートナーの喪失といった、生死に直面した個人的な体験に深く根ざしている。これらの身体的経験や個人史は、直接描かれるべき物語としてではなく、存在の有限性に向き合う根底的なスタンスとして機能している。黒い紙と水彩色鉛筆を用いた物質的なプロセスを通じ、暗闇から立ち現れる具象的な像を定着させながら、人間存在の深淵を問い続けている。
